Two local NPOs partner to bring free eye testing and glasses to residents of Alexandra

OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation is a leading global non-profit organisation, which believes that sight is an integral part of the most basic needs of human living. Clear vision reveals to individuals what they are capable of. Clear sight keeps students focussed in the classroom as 80% of learning is visual. It helps people commute to and perform better at their jobs. It decreases the risk of social isolation and helps people build connections.

There are approximately 1 in 7 people in the world in need of access to vision care who lack it because of geographical distance or affordability. OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation operates in 53 countries and since 1998 they’ve helped 7 million people to see clearly through providing eye testing and dispensing glasses at an affordable cost. They operate 3 sustainable vision centres in South Africa and more will be added this year. They also host charitable clinics across the country to take vision care to communities where lack of access due to geographical distance or finance seems impossible.

In April this year, 550 Soweto residents were given the opportunity to access  eye testing and glasses. From 7 – 9 June 2022, OneSight Essilor Luxottica Foundation will be partnering with Rays of Hope for their second in a series of 10 clinics to be hosted across the country. Rays of Hope has been operating in Alexandra Township for the past 30 years. Through their footprint into the community, the organisation has conducted pre-screening with 900 residents to identify individuals who have a need for free eye testing, glasses or other forms vision care to be determined by optometrists at the clinic.

OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation would like to invite you to come see and hear first hand about the work they’ve been doing in South Africa since 2010. There is no age limit to the individuals that the organisation supports. Children and adults in dire need of vision care that have been through the pre-screening process will be assisted during the clinic.
